M. C. Escher - Cover Art Books

This page in effect consists of a gathering of Escher’s artwork that has appeared on the front covers of books and journals, albeit with specific exclusions as deemed appropriate. Note that I have excluded examples that are self referential, that is, with books and journals purposefully featuring Escher, of which an artwork on the cover will appear by default, for example The Graphic Work of M.C. Escher, or Visions of Symmetry, or of congresses devoted to him, such as M.C. Escher: Art and Science. In contrast, this is a listing of books without an Escher premise per se, beyond the author using Escher’s artwork to best illustrate the subject matter. Unfortunately, a common occurrence is that the print is shown in a truncated form, to greater or lesser degrees, of which this misses the point. Without doubt, the whole print should be shown. For instance, ‘Day and Night’ is shown broadly cut in two in Selins, of which this gives a false impression, and indeed looses all meaning seen at face value when shown like this. How is the tyro meant to understand the intricacies?

The reasoning behind this compilation is one of interest as to what people from other fields, largely aside from mathematics, find interesting as regards Escher’s artwork. That said, it is also interesting as to what mathematicians like as well, and to that end I have included generic mathematics books as well. Many different fields are covered, notably social sciences, under a broad umbrella, with in particular philosophy favoured. Other fields include medicine, fiction and horror, to name but a few. At times, there is a blurring of subject matter; the list above is just an indication. Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, the most obvious connection, namely the field of mathematics, has relatively few covers.

The page is in three parts. First, a straightforward bibliographic listing of instances where an Escher print or periodic drawing has been used on the cover. Second, a chronological sequence, with pictures of the covers. Third, a frequency listing for analytic purposes.

Upon the initial bibliographic listing, one can then sift for different aspects For example, one can see when Escher’s work first appeared on a cover (in 1959). Another sifting is by the most popular artwork (‘Drawing Hands’ represented 33 times). These aspects are discussed in more detail below, in ‘Observations’ at the end of the page.

Note that on occasions, it is not always possible to present the findings in an ideal was as possible. For instance, a book can have minor variations of covers. For instance, In His Image has two editions which has Drawing Hands in different scales and placement of image. Other books are of a like nature. Where this occurs, I have decided to show only one instance; to say this has two distinct covers is stretching a point. However, where a book has a different edition with intrinsically different covers, such as Introduction to Philosophy, with Dewdrop and Three Worlds, this is indeed included. Note that tracking down all editions of a book that has gone through various editions is not an easy task; many change their original Escher picture for something else, or replace an earlier edition with an Escher picture. Possibly, for a given edition, the artwork may appear even earlier, but here I only show evidenced-based covers. If any reader knows of earlier editions, I would be pleased to receive details.

Note that this is very much a provincial listing, as although indeed thorough (and by far surpasses any other of the few listings), as essentially ‘hit or miss’ searching on the web for cover art cannot be described as of an ‘all-encompassing’ nature. I am at the whim of search engines (or more exactly Google; Bing and Yahoo are next to no use in these matters). It must remain doubtful whether a complete list of every Escher artwork ever used will be feasible, although possibly records are kept with the Escher foundation as regards permissions. Be that as it may, the researches above, over the past few months, with 300+ covers, it is now mature enough to give a rough idea of a typical representation of Escher cover art. I would not be in the least surprised if there would be many more upon a more exhaustive search. Indeed, I have largely confined my search to English language covers; likely foreign instances will be just as popular. Speculating as regards foreign instances is fraught with difficulty, perhaps there may well yet remain hundreds more. As ever, an open invite to readers – are you aware of any Escher cover artwork not featured here? If so, I would like to know of it. Do feel free to contribute any new instances.

In the text below, on occasions, as both a print and periodic drawing share the same title (as given by Locher (prints) and Schattschneider (periodic drawings) confusion can occur. For instance, such as Horseman, or near similes, such as Swan and Swans, and so for the sake of clarity where this occurs I add ‘periodic drawing’ or ‘print’ as appropriate to remove any ambiguity as to type.

On a personal note, this essay and latterly investigation has long been in gestation, indeed, ever since 1993, when I saw an article by C. H. A. Broos in The World of M.C. Escher, this featuring eight instances of Escher cover art on a variety of mediums: record album sleeves, books and journals. (Does anyone have contact details of Broos? Is he still alive?) However, I didn’t do anything on this until more recent times until I received, in 2011 Jeffrey Price’s book M. C. Escher: Amazing Images, this containing his own personal collection of Escher cover art, which then inspired me investigate and look for further instances, and initially compiled a listing (without pictures) of about 20 instances in 2011. And again, of a listing by Ken Wilkie in Holland Herald. Later, to a lesser extent, John Coulthart’s page of album covers per se, one of which featured Escher, was also an inspiration. Then, in February 2015, at whim, as is my wont, I then decided to revisit, but this time in a more determined way, with a more thorough and extensive web search, as well as providing pictures. Plans are to extend the investigation to record and CD covers, but this will be a while.

As can be seen from the table, use of Escher's works has been steadily growing, albeit inconsistently through the years. From 1952, although of a single instance for many years, until the early 1960s, here there was can be described as a trickle of interest. From the 1970s onwards, there was consistent use of Escher's artworks, albeit of a slight dip in the 1980s and most of the 1990s, before what can only be described as a veritable frenzy of use in the late 1990s, continuing throughout the 2000s. Indeed, his work has never been more popular than in recent times.

Observations

Of interest are the number (frequency/popularity) and the type choice (periodic drawings or prints, and subsets thereof, of tessellation-based and non-tessellation) of the artwork used; from this, one can see that some are more favoured over others. There are some surprising findings here. Prints that one you think before would be of a high ranking simply do not appear, all of which I discuss in detail below.

78 different artworks are identified. Prints (67) are noticeably favoured over periodic drawings (11). Indeed, the first appearance of a periodic drawing is of twenty-fourth entry (of PD 67, ‘Horseman’). Indeed, of a more selective nature, of the top twenty, only five are of a tessellation element: ‘Day and Night’, ‘Sky and Water I’, ‘Butterflies’, ‘Circle Limit IV’, and ‘Liberation’; one would perhaps have thought that this would be inclined to tessellation-based prints. However, places two and four are indeed of tessellation elements. Of the entire listing, nearly half of these (28) are of a single instance, and can be described as ‘one-hit wonders’.

What strikes me about the collection, overall, is the wide degree of subjects. You name your field of interest, and it’s almost certainly there! Notably, ‘social sciences’ form the majority; with in particular philosophy is by far the most favoured. Other prominent fields include medicine, science fiction and horror, to name but a few. Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, the most obvious connection, namely the field of mathematics, has relatively few covers. Indeed, taken as a whole, the sciences are relatively few in number. Note that at times, there is a blurring of subject matter; the list above is just an general statement.

In regard of philosophy aspects, two prints in particular are of note with numerous covers, namely ‘Drawing Hands’ (30) and ‘Hand with ‘Reflecting Sphere’ (24). Indeed, these are, along with ‘Day and Night’ (27), the top three in the listings. Quite what explains the popularity of ‘Hand with ‘Reflecting Sphere’ and ‘Drawing Hands’ over other prints is unclear. Certainly, the philosophy community see something extra in these. Perhaps somewhat unexpectedly, ‘Day and Night’, widely regarded as Escher’s ‘best’ work is not at the top, albeit it is indeed on a rough par with the philosophy-based prints above.

Other high-ranking instances include Sky and Water I (20), Relativity (15), and Other World (14). these form an arbitrary ‘high grouping’, with below them ‘Ascending and Descending’ (9), ‘Bond of Union’ (8), ‘Rind’ (7). However, in contrast, other established widely acclaimed outstanding instances, such as Verbum (2) and Reptiles (4) pale into near insignificance, and are clearly not as high as I would have expected. Indeed, I would have expected these to be right at the top end. What can explain such a discrepancy? Speculating as regards the tessellation elements, perhaps ‘Day and Night’ can be described as showing ‘simple elegance’, whilst ‘Verbum’ is too ‘clever’. However, ‘Reptiles’ could also be described as ‘philosophical’ in intent, so quite why it noticeably trails ‘Drawing Hands’ and ‘Hand with Reflecting Sphere’ is, to me at least, unclear.
